To celebrate LGBT History Month, we’ve chosen the Sexual Orientation module, which forms part of our recently updated Equality & Diversity range, as February’s Module of the Month.
Starting in 2005, the annual event aims to increase the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, their history and experiences, with this year’s theme of Peace, Reconciliation and Activism chosen to mark 100 years since the Treaty of Versailles as well as the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in New York which inspired the modern gay rights movement.
Ahead of the event, LGBT charity Stonewall has released its Workplace Equality Index, which celebrates the Top 100 most LGBT-inclusive employers in the UK, stating that businesses have the power to affect positive social change as they sit on the frontlines of driving equality forward.
Despite this, studies show that for a third of LGBT employees the fear of discrimination prevented them from coming out, which is why Stonewalls Head of Private Sector Memberships, Vicky Hayden, believes “it’s crucial that employers listen to their LGBT staff and the challenges they face to come up with solutions together.”
